How Do I Reconnect with My Inner Goddess?

By | Goddess Wisdom, Walk the Path, Wisdom Blog | No Comments

I was talking with a client the other day who feels very disconnected from who she is and is on a journey to find herself. She said that, in some ways, she feels like she is living someone else’s life, merely going through the motions. I get it. I’ve been there (see today’s video for more of my story).

Regardless of how you became disconnected from yourself – for me, it was decades of being a “good girl” and doing what I thought I “should” do – the question remains: how do I connect back in with my inner goddess? With myself?

Before I answer that question, I think it’s important to get clear on who this inner goddess is. To me, your inner goddess is your connection with the divine feminine essence/the creator of all things. If inner goddess doesn’t work for you, you may like to think of this as your woman’s intuition, inner guide, or feminine knowing – the inner wisdom that all women share. All of us have a connection to the feminine divine – it is within us, part of our soul. It’s your willingness to collaborate, your unbounded creativity, intuition, nurturing, courage, inner strength, and wisdom beyond your years. It’s the feminine part of you that can heal yourself.

Your Inner Goddess is you, but she is you at the core of who you are. She is all of your potential. She is the woman you were meant to be. She cares little for what other people think. She listens to the music of her soul and she dances to it. She has walked through fire and emerged, if not unscathed, truly victorious. She has cried, had her heart broken, and known the depths of loss and pain. But instead of allowing herself to be overcome by them, she has used these challenges to grow, to strengthen her resolve, her belief in herself.

She is your intuition, your inner knowing, your connection to and embodiment of the Divine Feminine. She is your beauty. She is your light. She is your truth. She wants what’s best for you; yet, she also wants you to live your Soul’s Purpose. She wants you to shine your light and be a beacon of hope for others. She wants you to stop hiding.

This may seem like a daunting task, and it can certainly feel that way. Yet, your inner goddess is here to guide you every step of the way. All you have to do is to take that first step and trust in God/Universe, in yourself.

In today’s video, I offer 3 ways you can begin to connect in with your inner goddess and blossom into the woman you were meant to be.

Who Is The Goddess Within?

the goddess within

“The Goddess doesn’t enter us from outside; she emerges from deep within. She is not held back by what happened in the past. She is conceived in consciousness, born in love, and nurtured by higher thinking. She is integrity and value, created and sustained by the hard work of personal growth and the discipline of a life lived actively in hope.” — Marianne Williamson

In April of 2013, during a guided meditation, I experienced something that would change the course of my life. You see, I had been working for 9 months on a book about the Psychology of Eating, my research specialty. Yet, I had hit writer’s block. Big time. I hadn’t made any progress on my book in 3 months.

At the advice of my friend and mentor, Linda Joy, I contacted her book coach – Lisa Tener. Lisa offered to lead me through a guided meditation to meet my writing muse so I could ask her why I had writer’s block. Desperate, I jumped at the chance.

The problem came when I actually met my writing muse, what I now refer to as my inner goddess. She told me that I had writer’s block because I was writing the wrong book for the wrong people. That I was supposed to be writing a book about awakening your inner goddess that, as I wrote, would heal me, and as other women read the book, would help them heal.

I panicked. I fought her. I tried to ignore her. Who did she think she was telling me I was writing the wrong book? It was based on my life’s work, which at that point was over 15 years of research. How could it be the wrong book? And I knew nothing about the Goddess. Sure, I loved learning about the Greek and Roman myths during my five years of taking Latin, but other than that, I didn’t even know what an Inner Goddess was, let alone that I had one.

But after another week of getting nowhere on my book on the Psychology of Eating, I sat down and did the meditation again, then went to my computer and starting writing. The words flowed out of me like water. All I had to do was: 1) get out of my own way, and 2) be open to receiving the lessons I needed to learn.

Fast forward two and a half years…

In some ways, on the surface, my life doesn’t look all that different than it did when I first met my Inner Goddess in April of 2103. I still am a Professor, I still research body image and eating disorders, I still teach classes on the Psychology of Eating and blog about the topic for Psychology Today. Yet, I am a different woman. I am stronger, more confident, more sure of myself, more courageous than I ever thought possible. I am authentically me. I no longer hide in shadows for fear of what others might think. I wear my purple streaked flowing mermaid hair with pride. I speak my truth and walk in my power. I belly dance half naked in public because I love it and it allows me to express my creativity and my connection to the Divine Feminine. I am no longer afraid.

You see, that day in April of 2013 I made a decision, a decision to stop living a lie, to stop hiding my truth – the truth of who I was.

Who is this Inner Goddess?

She is you, but she is you at the core of who you are.

She is the woman you were before society got ahold of you and turned you into who you are now.

She is your beauty. She is your light. She is your truth.

“Maybe the journey isn't so much about becoming anything. Maybe it's unbecoming everything that isn't you so you can be who you were meant to be in the first place.” – Unknown

Are you ready to unbecome who you are not so you can be who you were meant to be?

7 Steps to Reconnect with Your Intuition

By | Goddess Wisdom, Wisdom Blog | No Comments

inner voice of wisdom

You know the one. The one that calls us on our issues, whispers our true desires in our ears, and criticizes everything we do. Wait what?

That's the exact conversation I had with a client the other day. She thought that voice that constantly belittles and criticizes her was her intuition. Let me tell you: it's not. I know because I used to think this way too.

Up until a few years ago, I had lost touch with my inner voice of wisdom. My inner critic, on the other hand, was alive and well… She came out to “play” all the time. Every decision I made was the wrong one; if something – anything – went wrong it was my fault; every thought I had was self-critical. Then one day I had an experience that changed my life. In a guided meditation, I was able to connect with my real inner voice of wisdom – not the critical one, but that one that knows me and what's best for me. And I never turned back.

So how did I do this? I'd love to tell you it was easy; it wasn't – not always – because my inner critic had a firm hold on me by this point in my life. I'd love to tell you that my inner critic never rears her ugly head – she still does sometimes. Not often, but occasionally. What I want to share with you today is my journey – the steps I took to activate my inner goddess and reconnect with my intuition.

  • Step 1: Be v. Do – the first thing I had to do when learning to reconnect with my intuition was to slow down long enough to hear her words; she whispered so softly at first that I could barely hear her. I had to be actively listening and quiet my mind for her to be able to get through.
  • Step 2: Put on Your Oxygen Mask – you know how when you travel on an airplane, the flight attendants give the safety spiel before you take off? Part of that talk says something like, “in the event of an emergency, oxygen masks will drop down from the ceiling. Please secure your own mask before helping those around you.” That's what you must do to reconnect with your intuition – you have to put on your oxygen mask and take care of you. Why? 1) No one else will, and 2) if you don't have any oxygen (i.e., food, self-care, sleep, time for you), you won't be able to be of service to others.
  • Step 3: Walk in Your Power – you have to actually practice this. You can talk about wishing you could activate your inner goddess and reconnect with your intuition until you're blue in the face, but if you don't actually take the steps, nothing will change. Yes: you have to do more than just talk the talk, you've got to walk the walk.
  • Step 4: Learn to Let Go – When you first start to reconnect it may seem like life is happening in such a way that you can no longer control it. Want to know a little secret? You never could. We can't control other people; we can't control what happens for us; all we can control is how we react. I learned a valuable lesson a few years ago: sometimes you have to let go. Let what is going to happen happen and trust that everything will work out just as it should. Because it will.
  • Step 5: Learn to Trust Yourself Again – When your inner critic has been running the show for decades, it's easy to not trust that little voice of wisdom when it first crops up. After all, your inner critic is probably right there with you criticizing your intuition. So you have to begin to trust that little voice. How? This goes back to the conversation I had with my client the other day. How do you know if it's your intuition rather than your inner critic? 1) if it's mean or makes you feel icky, it's your inner critic; 2) if it makes you feel contracted, and like you want to curl up in a ball, it's your inner critic. Your intuition should feel good – free, expansive.
  • Step 6: Get Out of Your Comfort Zone – this is the scary part. Comfort zones are familiar; even if you're not happy, you know what to expect. But to truly activate your inner goddess and reconnect with your intuition, you must start to do things differently. I mean if what you'd been doing all this time was working for you, you wouldn't be ready this blog post, would you? So what I want you to do is dream a little. What do you want your life to look like? What's one step you can take today to make that happen?
  • Step 7:  Find Your Voice – as you start to dream, you may realize that to achieve your goals, you may need to (gasp!) change some things in your life. This may include getting out of some of your current obligations and learning to say no. I know, I know; easier said than done. But this is one of those things where practice really does make perfect. Write out how you want this conversation to go; rehearse it in your head. Then go have said conversation. It may not go perfectly, but I can guarantee it will go better than it would have if you hadn't tried.
