Blossoming into You: Nourish the Seeds You Planted Earlier in the Year

Aaahhh April. In Idaho, that's the month that can't decide whether it wants to be sunny and warm or 20 and snowing. It's what I call the “hurry up and wait” month. My lilies are trying to bloom, but keep getting frostbite. I have big plans for my summer, but still have 6 more weeks of school until I get there. I want to do 10 things, but really only have time for one.

We were taking about this is one of my group coaching programs the other day. We wish we were “there,” or at least further ahead than where we are now. We keep feeling like we're getting off track, but we were really never on track to begin with. We want to be done with our growth and healing, yet, life happens and sometimes there are more lessons we need to learn about a particular topic we thought we were done with. 

For many of us, the energies of April bring a feeling of excitement and uncertainty at the same time. We may know where we want to go, or what our end goal is, but we're not quite sure how to get there. Or maybe we don't know where we're going and that's the frustrating part. 

Instead of rushing to get nowhere or getting derailed by “bright shiny object” syndrome, breathe. Trust that it will all unfold in due time. Easier said than done, huh? So while we are in the midst of this “hurry up and wait” energy, what can you do?

  1. Assess where you are – think about all the different areas of your life. Identify what’s working well and what’s not working so well right now. Then take a deep dive to figure out why some things are working and some aren’t. No blame or shame here, this is just an honest assessment.
  2. Figure out what you want – where do you want to be a year from now? 5 years from now? If you don’t know yet, that’s okay. Start smaller. Where do you want to be 1 month from now? 3 months? 6 months? What are your short-term and longer-term goals?
  3. Pick one area of your life or one goal you want to focus on – that’s right. One area/goal. (See today’s video for my reasoning on that one.)
  4. Set mini goals for yourself each week that will bring you one step closer to that bigger goal – again, set no more than a couple of mini goals each week. These mini goals need to feel – and be – doable without feeling overwhelming.
  5. Take exquisite care of you – you have to nourish these metaphorical seeds that you are planting. Just like my poor frostbitten lilies, if you start out with too much, too soon, you may not achieve your goal. Take it slow and take care of you.
  6. Realize that growth takes time – see the M.C. Richards quote above. It won't happen overnight, but as long as you take baby steps in the right direction and take care of you, it will happen. When you feel like you're getting off track, sprinkle a heavy dose of self-compassion in there. You are making progress. Even when it feels like you're taking two steps forward and three steps back, as long as that process is getting to you re-evaluate and learn, then you are making progress.
  7. Breathe and trust that it will all work out – after all, you are well on your way!
